Fresh single serving organic spices

I’m not very adventurous in my spice usage. That’s probably because most of my spices came in a spice rack that was a wedding gift… almost 8 years ago. Apparently the shelf life for spices is anywhere from 1 - 3 years. So yes, it’s time to clean out the cabinet!

Yesterday in Country Living Magazine, I read about tsp spices, a company started by Katie and Sara, two spicy mamas who met in business school and discovered their shared passion for fresh organic spices. Now they’re successfully living their “second lives” providing a variety of teaspoon-size organic spice packets, neatly packaged in simple reusable tins. You can buy one tin full of 12 individual servings of a single spice ($9 each), or choose from their many sampler packages ($16 or $42). I think these would be original hostess gifts, or a thoughtful gift for a girlfriend’s mom.

(Side note: I’ve been wanting to say “gift for a girlfriend’s mom” for a while now. I know this site isn’t geared toward thoughtful boyfriends, but every now and then someone comes here after searching for the term “gift for girlfriend’s mom” and I hate to disappoint!)

Available at tsp spices or check their store locator

Hi, great find on the spices. I don’t think I’d buy them for myself (kinda expensive) but they would make a great hostess gift.

For my spices, I keep them fresh for as long as possible with the SpiceStack - it stores 27+ spices from the grocery store (i.e. not those packaged ones you get with your spice rack from who knows where!) in your kitchen cabinets where they stay dark, dry and happy. Best of all, with drop-down drawers you can find your spices easily and quickly. I thought maybe your readers would like to check it out at http://www.SpiceStack.com. Happy Cooking!

I recently came across this great food blog that shows you to use spices in unique and wonderful ways. The photos are beautiful. I’m learning new ways to use those spices that have been in my cupboard for a long time.

I’m loving all the spice tips. Thanks! Here’s another good one my aunt e-mailed to me:

“If it is time to spill out the old spices, keep the containers. You can go to a co-op and get the spices filled directly into your containers (they weigh the container and only charge for the spices). A good way to keep the darling wedding gift spices and save on the environment, little as this process would be!”
