Fun Finds For Mom

I know I can’t be alone in my search for the perfect BPA-free/eco-friendly/leak-proof/easy-to-open  lunch containers, right? A few years ago, there weren’t a lot of options. These days, there’s really no excuse for blazing through fitsfulls of ziploc bags — which I was very guilty of until recently.

Now my cupboards are stuffed with a variety of bento boxes, and containers of all shapes and sizes. (And don’t get me started on the water bottles!) But… I hadn’t tried out any stainless steel lunch containers until Greentainer was kind enough to send me a snack set and a large container with clips to try out. I have to say, the snack set is my favorite. I love it for a few reasons.

First, it’s not plastic. I do use plastic containers, but they always leave you wondering if a new study is going to come out about the effects of a chemical you’ve never heard of. Greentainers are made of high quality grade 304 stainless steel. It is 100% reusable and recyclable, made from the earth’s own resources, so it does not contribute to landfills. It is free of toxins and non-leaching. Love that.

Second, Greentainers are round. I did not own any round lunch containers before now. And as you know, I am kind of obsessed with Bagel Thins. So the Bagel Thins fit perfectly in the large container from the snack set. My kids love it when they get a bagel sandwich in their lunch. They also love it when they get a little round container full of bunny crackers (or fresh fruit, when I’m being a good healthy lunch-packing mom).

Finally, great lids on the snack set. They fit on tight and snug, but even my 4 year old has no problem getting them off by herself. When I asked my kids if they had any trouble opening the containers after the first time I packed them in their lunches, they both said that at first they thought the lids screwed off, but then they figured out they lifted straight up and that they came off easily.

I’ve only had the occasion to use the large container with clips once. I packed lunch for my husband to take to work, which doesn’t happen too often. I put chips in the bottom part of the container, and a sandwich in the lift-out tray that fits on top of the lower compartment. It’s sort of like a slimmed-down tiffin. He was a little skeptical, and wanted to put the container in a paper bag – which sort of defeats the purpose, really. I told him just to take it alone. Then he thought his colleagues would think he was going camping. Obviously he’s not up on the latest lunch container trends. Anyway, he said his sandwich was hard, so if you’re going to use it for things that get stale easily, you might want to try the version with no clips, for a more snug fit. I think this container would be perfect for packing hummus and veggies for dipping.

Greentainer says these are dishwasher-safe, but I have been handwashing them. They make frequent appearances in my kids lunchboxes.
