Fun Finds For Mom

How to raise book worms

I have such memories of getting completely absorbed in books when I was a kid. Nancy Drew, Choose Your Own AdventuresThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, even Flowers in the Attic (remember that creepy ’80s series?) are some that stand out.  I’m still a book lover, and one of these days I am finally going to join a book club to get myself on a regular reading schedule. Yes, reading is a magical thing. As parents, I’m sure we all want our kids to share our love books, to broaden their horizons and enjoy the pure pleasure of diving into a book that makes them completely forget everything else.

If you’re interested in some practical tips on raising book lovers, I recently wrote an article titled How to raise book worms for SheKnows.com.

What were your favorite books as kids? It’s fun to order out of print books you remember from your childhood on Amazon.com and share them with your own kids.

i LOVE that pic of the wall o books!!!! i LOVE to read – i have three books going right now!! i have found on amazon.com you can buy books for a penny!!! plus 3.99 shipping and handling! BUT still a good deal i think! i remember nancy drew books..i don’t remember anything in particular that i read – but i always had books from the library in my bedroom! i had to walk to the library to get books – it was probably a 5 mile walk – one way! It was so great when i could drive a car and go!! a book that i read to my boys is called The Giver by Lois Lowry..a GREAT book. i would read it out loud to them – a chapter at a time. then we would talk about the chapter..i just went to amazon.com and bought it for a penny!!! i can’t wait to read it again!

Isn’t that bookshelf amazing? Thanks for the book recommendation — I will have to check it out! I’m reading a chapter or two from Stuart Little to my kids each night now, and they are really enjoying it. We just finished Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Saggy Knees and it gave us all lots of belly laughs!

I loved all those books you listed and the wall of books is amazing. my almost 6 yr old has a book shelf that is bursting with books – we’ve kept them all as he gets older he likes to go back and see what he can read on his own.

i have weeded out some books with my grandsons – and the ones that they have outgrown we will be giving to a local church. It teaches them to share – one grandson doesn’t want to get rid of anything!! the other is more accomodating. A lesson for us all.
