Fun Finds For Mom

Make your own construction signs

My son loves construction. Seeing a Road Work Ahead sign is cause for celebration. He was telling me this afternoon that he wished his play construction set had a Detour sign. I had a eureka moment when I thought to use Google and find some Detour sign graphics to print out and make our own signs. And oh did we find Detour signs. Never before did I know there were bicycle detours, pedestrian detours, bicycle AND pedestrian detours… You get the idea. Then I got really crazy and googled “construction signs” where I found Detour and many many more.

We’ve only just begun the project, but here’s what we did to make the Detour and Exit signs shown above:

1. Google “construction signs

2. Print out page and color signs

3. Glue page to cardstock paper and cut out signs

4. Use scotch tape to “laminate” signs and tape them to a toothpick

5. Insert toothpick into leftover “fun dough” from birthday party. I think any playdough or clay-like substance would work. Or mini marshmallows, but we didn’t have any, and they probably would have gotten eaten anyway.

He had a blast setting up our new signs, along with the plastic ones, in the construction zone he created on the floor throughout the house. He is beyond excited that we can now make any kind of construction sign we want.
