Fun Finds For Mom

My new desk

jcpenney-brown-desk.jpg pb-brown-desk.jpg

I’ve had my eye on Pottery Barn’s Bedford Desk for a long long time. Just about every time I receive my weekly Pottery Barn catalog, I flip right to that darn desk and picture exactly where it would go in my home (replacing the tiny, clutter-covered table in the corner).

Then I was obsessing over my blog stats and noticing how many people have found Fun Finds For Mom by searching for “Pottery Barn knock-off” (or something like that), leading them to my post about JC Penney’s Pottery Barn Kids knock-off bedding. So I thought – hey! I should check out JC Penney’s office furniture. Boy they’re good. Their Customizable Office Desk looks like a pretty close replication of Pottery Barn’s Bedford collection for a significantly lower price. The most noticeable difference to me is the hardware, which could be easily replaced. So we went ahead and ordered one. Eek and yay! Does anyone own either one of these desks who could comment on their satisfaction with it? Thanks!

Did you ever receive your JC Penney Customizable Desk? I’m in the same boat, I’ve been wanting the Bedford Corner desk in Black for probably 2 years – I’m just not sure of the quality of the JC Penney desk. They both say MDF, but Pottery Barn’s says its covered with Pine Veneer. I’m wondering if the JC Penney version is just laminate, or wood veneer. I’ve also heard the Pottery Barn version scratches easily and doesn’t really hold up to lots of wear… I would love to know if you’re happy with your purchase. =)

    Thanks!

Yes, we did get our JC Penney desk and I absolutely love it. The quality is great and it really has the same kind of look as the Pottery Barn Bedford desk. I’m not sure about your laminate/wood veneer question, but it is made of MDF and is smooth and doesn’t seem to scratch easily.

I just bought this desk in white. The main pieces that you order are already put together, which is great. I have an older computer, and my tower would only fit in the computer cabinet tilted to the side. The finish is cheap, and I can tell that it probably won’t look good for long. I already have some dark fingerprints on it that won’t come off. I am thinking of getting a glass top to protect it. The drawers don’t open and close as well as kitchen cabinets. But I like that I could customize it with the two file drawers, which is hard to find with other desks. Good luck.

  4. Elaina on March 2nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm:

Thanks Barbara. I should mention that we ordered the dark wood color, so haven’t had the same problems with fingerprints. Maybe try a Magic Eraser?

I am looking for the hardware on the bedford collection. Anyone know where I can find it?

  6. Elaina on March 15th, 2008 at 2:25 pm:

I e-mailed Pottery Barn to see if they sold the hardware from the Bedford collection. The response was that they did not and I should try my local hardware store. Unfortunately it’s not so easy. I spent about an hour searching online for the Bedford hardware when I first ordered the JC Penney desk, and didn’t have any luck. There are quite a few other Pottery Barn drawer pulls on eBay.

  7. cathy on March 18th, 2008 at 4:55 am:

I have been searching for weeks. I found chest pulls but they are a bit bulky. also emailed pottery barn. They told me they could tell me who the vendor was. Thank you for responding… my search continues = (

  8. Janus on April 7th, 2008 at 7:18 pm:

I’m agonizing about what to order. I love the black, but the file drawers aren’t available in black at JCP. I called and they said they were waiting on the vendor and don’t even know if they will be getting more. Does anyone have the name of the maker? Or a website? Maybe I could order directly from the manufacture…Help!

  9. Tracy on May 14th, 2008 at 12:46 pm:

Thanks so much for this! I’m in love with the Bedford corner desk in white but not crazy about paying $700 + tax + shipping for it. The only thing I’m unsure of is that I don’t see the dimensions anywhere on JCPenney’s site for the desk pieces. I generally like to measure the area it’s going in just to visualize it and it would be nice to check the depth of the CPU cabinet vs. my computer before it arrives.

  10. Elaina on May 14th, 2008 at 1:13 pm:

Hi Tracy. It’s kind of fun to see this little faux Bedford Desk community forming here! If you click on the name of each item in the JC Penney collection, a pop-up window opens with the details and measurements of that particular piece. Not the most user-friendly design, because it’s not apparent right away that there are links there. Here’s what they show for the CPU cabinet measurements: Overall: 19-½x18x28-½”H; CPU compartment: 17-¼x17x18-¾”H.

I should mention that we did have to cut a hole in the back of our CPU cabinet because the CPU was overheating without having that ventilation. And it’s true that the quality on this is not the same as Pottery Barn’s Bedford desk (little nicks in the dark “wood” in a few places), but for the price, I am still very happy with this purchase.

  11. Tracy on May 14th, 2008 at 5:11 pm:

Oh, thanks!! I didn’t even notice that pop up window option. I’ve been watching the white Bedford desk for a while – hoping it would come down in price a little more. I’m leaning towards giving the JCPenney option a try! Thank you so much for this information.

  12. Mandy on June 1st, 2008 at 5:51 pm:

Wow! I also noticed the similarity while debating whether or not to splurge on the bedford collection. It makes it hard to justify the PB set, when you can get such a close knock-off version. The CPU/file cabinet measurements were helpful…seriously, who doesn’t include furniture measurements on a website?! Does anyone know the measurements for the desktop? I would assume it’s close to the 23″x70″ PB version, but I would feel better hearing from someone who knows. Thanks! (It’s good to know I’m not alone out here with my Pottery Barn and bargain-hunting obsession!

  13. Mandy on June 1st, 2008 at 5:54 pm:

Oops. Disregard that last message’s request for measurements. Found them.

  14. Lauren on June 6th, 2008 at 11:16 am:

    Hi ladies!
I just purchased this desk. JCP.com delivered it to the store for me in two days! I am happy with the desk. It’s a great compromise on the PB one. However, when I put the desktop on, it seems to have a huge lip that doesn’t show up on the ads online. Did anyone else notice this? It’s not the end of the work but it seems more difficult to access the back of the drawers this way. I do love the way it looks in my room though.

  15. Joy on June 8th, 2008 at 1:44 am:

Thanks so much for posting about this desk. I’ve wanted the PB Bedford corner desk for over a year and my hubby and I were ready to make the purchase today and just couldn’t justify spending the money. I happened to come across your post and checked out JC Penny and they have a corner one just like PB too! The only thing I’m bummed about is the hardware…..

BUT…… I did a lot of searches online and found some very similiar hardware….. you can find almost identical door pulls if you Google “chest hardware” and they range about $3-$5/each in various sizes and finishes. On the PB 2 and 3 door file cabinets there are square plates above the handles- you can find those online by Googling “file cabinet card holder”- they come in various finishes too.

Thanks so much for sharing the info about JC Penny. Hopefully the handle info will help make the desk an even closer match. I’m looking forward to buying my new JC Penny desk and hardware soon!

So obviously no one has posted on this blog for a good while, but I stumbled across it and had to put in my 2 cents!

I am a college student and don’t make a great deal of money. But I was raised to know that you get what you pay for. I fell in love with the Bedford desk and bought it in pieces, so the $700 didn’t hit me so hard. And it was worth the wait and every penny – solid wood, beautiful yet simple design, amazing quality. So to me, yea I may have spent more on it, but it will look just as good 10 years down the line, where cheaper versions most likely will not. For something that you will have for that long, it’s always better to invest in quality in my opinion!

  23. Maria on November 16th, 2008 at 1:26 pm:

I was amazed that I am not the only one who has spent so much time researching trying to find a PB bedford style desk. I also found the jc penney look alike and am still debating. I have starting checking out craigslist. Every once in a while there is a PB bedford desk for sale for $300 or $400. You just have to make sure the condition is good (most of them say they are). Who knows, someone’s loss may be your gain!! Still debating, hoping to pull the trigger soon!!

  24. Jrock on November 19th, 2008 at 7:28 am:

I needed measurements for the corner desk. I’ve been debating pulling the trigger for two years too! I’m going to see one I found on Craigslist for $400. But now that I see this JCP version, now on sale for $150!!! I think I’ll try to talk down the Craigslist guy. But this is very tempting. I’m a big guy though and the JCP version looks a bit narrower where you sit. Thanks for the JCP tip!

I picked up a Bedford set off Craigslist with the hutch for $140 this week. I’m almost peeing in my pants with happiness! :)

  26. J.T. on January 15th, 2009 at 7:39 am:

I like many others had been looking at the PB Bedford Desk set, I was looking at it for over a year. Went into the store to see it almost every month hoping that the price would drop and of course it never did, why would it if people are going to pay that much money for one. I was just about to breakdown and pay for the Bedford when I came across this post in Oct 08 and read about the desk at Penney’s, so I went to their website and saw that it was a fraction of the price, I read some of the reviews on Penney’s website and decided to go ahead and purchase 1 desktop, 1 2-drawer file cabinet, 1 3-drawer file cabinet and the desktop organizer and got it delivered to my house and taken upstairs to my office! I got all of that on sale for half of what the Bedford would have cost me. I purchased in the Dark Walnut color and was very impressed! I was so impressed that we purchased another complete set, so I got 2 desks for the same price of one Bedford! I haven’t had any problems with scratches or peeling. I will purchase a plexiglass top for both eventually just b/c I like them! Overall I must say I am VERY pleased with my Penney’s Customizable Desk Purchase, if I’d had enough room I would have gotten the Corner Desktop in the place of one of the Regular Desktops, but I’m not complaining. Penney’s now has a newer version of the Customizable desk but it only comes in Black and White, so I’m glad that I purchased mine ON CLEARANCE when they still had the Dark Walnut! This desk will last us for a very long time, I doubt we’ll ever have to purchase another one! Thanks Again and hope this helps someone else!

  27. Sheila on January 20th, 2009 at 7:10 am:

I am also looking at the Bedford desk and have priced it out to see if we can afford it. I was ready to move forward with some pieces when I found this site. I really like the look of the JCP desk and the Target desk. I want this in black and am concerned about quality.

Thanks for the JCP feedback. Does anyone know about the quality of the Target set? The black set has two reviews and of course 1 is good and the other isn’t.

I’d love to hear feedback from those who have had their sets for awhile as to how they hold up. THANKS!

  28. sam on February 10th, 2009 at 8:13 am:

If you are looking for the bedford pulls, just search ‘bail pulls library’. Similar type hardware is available at both Rejuvenation and House of Antique Hardware. Take a look at Riverside Furniture’s Basics Collection as well. I know it’s slightly more than PB’s piece for piece, but the quality is much better. Also, it actually ends up being less for a desk set because they don’t charge ENORMOUS fees (over $200 just for the small bedford desk) for shipping like PB does. Also, Target makes a better knockoff than JCPenney. It’s called the Coastline Collection and is also cheaper than the Penney’s version. It looks more like PB. If anyone buys it, let us know how the quality is!

    Hello,

There are several posts from about a year ago from people who had bought/were going to buy one of these desks: Pottery Barn Bedford; Target Coastline; or JC Penny Customizable. If you bought one of these, how do you feel about your purchase now? How is the desk holding up? Has anyone attempted to attach a keyboard tray to the PB Bedford?
I am interested in getting a corner-style desk.

    Thanks for your input.

  31. J.T. on May 27th, 2009 at 6:16 pm:

I posted my first response back in January about the customizable desk that I purchased from Penny’s that was similar to PB’s. I’m still loving my desk and have had absolutely no problems with it at all. I never did get that plexiglass top for it but my daughter has spilled water and juice on the desk and it cleaned up easily and still looks brand new. I haven’t had any problems with any chipped paint or stain. My keyboard tray works well and my file cabinet drawers still open and close easily. I am so glad that I decided to get the desk when I did because I see that they don’t carry the Espresso color in the desk anymore at Pennys. I purchased both of these desks for a steal, while they were on clearance and with an extra 20% off and they still look brand new. I am very satisfied with the quality of the desks and would recommend them to anyone, I believe they will last for many many years.

  32. Jeremy Toeman on July 9th, 2009 at 6:04 pm:

My wife and I (foolishly) bought the PB desk. It came with 2 pieces damaged. We contacted PB support and they rapidly replaced it. Next one showed up damaged. They offered me a replacement in-store, and promised to have a local person in the store inspect the unit. The replacement was there. Got home, it was damaged too (different piece this time). This is now our fourth try, fingers are still crossed.

That said, the parts that are here are very nice looking. But my advice right now would be to avoid this unit.

Did anyone purchase the JC Penney and have a problem with a chemical smell? We recieved our desk last week and the desk has a very strong chemical smell. We have been letting it air out but it doens’t seem to be getting any better. Am I the only one with this issue?

    Thank you.

  34. Mara on March 30th, 2010 at 8:45 pm:

I’m just seeing this great post. I’ve also been thinking of getting the Pottery Barn desk for a while and just saw the JCP desk. My only concern is if it will be big enough. It’s quite a bit smaller than the PB desk. I don’t want to feel like I’m sitting at a little girl’s desk. What do you think of the size? — Especially the sitting space? Also, are you still pleased with yours two years later?

    Thanks in advance!

  35. Angela on April 23rd, 2010 at 8:40 am:

I have a home office that includes three corner desks, a lateral file, regular-sized desk and a small desk all in the Pottery Barn Bedford Collection. I chose black. I got one corner desk and the small desk from two different sellers on Craigslist.com. The rest of the items I purchased out of box at my local Pottery Barn. “Out of box,” “scratch and dent,” sale, discontinued & used are great ways to cut costs, have what you want and the resale on them are better, too, because you have that brand name to advertise with. I have found the quality to be excellent, I was given a touch-up paint pen and I haven’t needed it yet. I also like the fact that I can purchase accessories from PB to accessorize.

I found this info comparing PB Bedford to JC Penney very helpful. I did notice, PB does not seem to have a keyboard return whereas JCP does offer it. Am I missing something? It seems the JCP is the better option on the whole. Kathy

  37. Emily on June 5th, 2010 at 8:24 pm:

    Hi,

I just received my PB Bedford Desk and it is great! It’s a great size and is spacious without being behemoth. I got the corner desk, which is a great use of space, especially if you use it with a computer/keyboard. One piece of advice that is helpful is that it is possible to buy the corner hutch in pieces- you can’t do it online but if you go into a store they will sell you only the center part of the hutch. This is great because it gets your computer monitor elevated and makes use of wasted space, without taking up all the room on the side pieces of the desk.

Also, I highly recommend skipping the acrylic $300+ PB desk protector and instead have a local glass company cut you 1/4″ glass. I did just that, and it cost me $270 to get custom cut glass that is much nicer and will last way longer. Without a glass protector the desk will show every fingerprint and smudge, and the wood top is not necessarily the highest quality. Glass on top will protect the desk and make it last longer (not to mention you don’t have to worry about eating at the desk or spilling things on it).

Overall, I am very pleased with the desk!

  38. Denise in Atlanta on August 15th, 2010 at 4:31 pm:

I just happened on your blog while research the PB Bedford I just purchase off of Craig’s List for $150! That’s right, only $150! I have been lusting after this desk for about 4 years and didn’t want to pull the trigger. However, I couldn’t resist the great deal on my favorite shopping spot, Craig’s List.

The JCP desk is nice, but, have to say that it must be pretty impressive in person, because in my opinion, the pics do not compare to the PB desk. But, I’m glad it works for you!

  39. Amy on August 18th, 2010 at 1:32 pm:

I have several pieces of the PB Bedford collection. I have had it for several years and I am very satisfied.
My question is, does anyone have any recommendations on adding a keyboard drawer to the corner unit? I am using my desk much more than I used to and it is not the most ergonomic set up?
Thanks for all the great tips. I never thought to check JCP for office furniture.
Here is a tip a can offer. I admired the wooden chairs that PB showed with the Bedford Collection but I couldn’t justify something I knew would be more for looks than comfort. I checked out a few local antique stores and found on for $50. I refinished it and it looks great. I even replaced to seat cushion and recovered it to match the office. A great find.

  40. Pottery Barn: Costing me a a great deal, without getting a deal! « Mommy Saveologist on February 15th, 2011 at 1:47 am:

[...] My research started today with some of my favorites furniture companies- Lexington and Ballards Design. Neither had exactly what I desired.  I finally found exactly what I was looking for in the Pottery Barn Catalog. It is the Bedford Collection:  a modular home office system. To create the look I desire,  I  want two connecting desk components.  I priced the Bedford Collection and as luck would have it, the total cost is way above my budget of$1500. Obviously, I will lose the bet,  and definitely not  met my expectations as Mommy Saveologist!  So, I just spent a half hour before  Katie’s feeding  researching and organizing  a solution. I started with Ebay… I  found some components of the Bedford collection, however nothing that was an exact match. Then I goggled “save on Bedford Potterybarn Collection”… and I learned researching does pay off:  this is what popped up…http://www.funfindsformom.com/blog/my-new-desk. [...]

  41. Sandra in Mpls on February 9th, 2012 at 1:53 pm:

I received my PB corner desk unit and love it. We installed an adjustable keyboard tray. It was a unit we already had on another built-in desk, and it was purchased by our builder. I don’t know where they got it, but it’s called “Comfort Plus, MP Series”. It is 25″ wide, which is wider than the front edge of the corner unit, but fits easily and slides in and out with no issues. With this width, there is room for both keyboard and mouse.
Thanks to this blog, I am planning to return the acrylic desk protectors and order custom glass from a nearby glass company. We were very unhappy with the quality of the acrylic! With the corner hutch weighted in the back, it causes the front of the acrylic to lip up, and catches on things. It also doesn’t stay in place very well. Interestingly, we will save $156 on the glass versus acrylic, with a much stronger product. I let PB know that I was dissatisfied, and they offered to reduce by 20% or let me return it. We’ve only had the desk for 2 weeks, and I LOVE the quality of the furniture, but was not happy with the acrylic.
