Nalgene Grip-N-Gulp Kids’ Bottle

Nalgene Bottles

This is the ultimate big kid, moving on up from the sippy cup, on-the-go bottle. I first saw it when my friend and her adorable 3 year old daughter came over for a playdate in their matching pink outfits and matching pink bottles. It’s also available in blue, which I ordered for my son. Besides being a cool-looking bottle, this bottle is quite functional too. It’s the perfect size for little hands and mouths, has a wide opening at the top for filling with ice (my son has discovered the fun of getting his own ice and water from the refrigerator door), and the water stays yummy and doesn’t get that mildewy taste that some of the older soft plastic bottles give.

Update: If you bought your Nalgene Grip-N-Gulp prior to May 2008, chances are it contains BPA. While Nalgene claims that BPA is not harmful (their response to my e-mail is posted below), they recently stopped making their bottles with BPA, and switched to a BPA-free material called Everyday Triton. I will be returning my Nalgene Grip-N-Gulp bottles to REI and will probably get Sigg or Klean Kanteens instead.

To learn more about the latest about concerns related to BPA, here’s a link to a recent Washington Post article.

Here is my response from Nalgene, received April 14, 2008:

Thank you for your inquiry about returning your Nalgene Outdoor products.

Agencies and researchers worldwide have studied the safety of BPA and polycarbonate for approximately 50 years; including The Environmental Protection Agency and The Food and Drug Administration in the USA, The European Commission Scientific Committee on Food, The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and the Japan Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.  Findings of studies from these agencies indicate that food and beverage containers manufactured from polycarbonate do not pose a health risk to humans.  As a result, polycarbonate is used in a wide variety of consumer products including baby bottles, water bottles, dental sealants and the lining of most food & beverage containers.

As such, we do not intend to recall any of our products and will not issue a credit or refund money for products that are not defective.
