Non-Plastic Bowls and Plates for the Kids - Part II

Back in November, I wrote about Corelle as a good choice for moms looking for non-plastic dishes for their kids. I never did get around to ordering the Corelle myself, but instead have been transitioning my kids over to the regular glasses and porcelain dishes that we’ve had since we got married. Ever the practical one, my husband wisely chose the classic PB White dishes and Cafe Barware from Pottery Barn. Seven years later, Pottery Barn still carries both, which has been great for when we need to replace broken pieces. And the funny thing is, the only breakage has come from the grown-ups, not the kids. Yes, we have to watch them a little more closely than if they were using plastic, but the glasses are thick enough that I’m not too worried about them getting hurt if they were to drop one. And even if they were to drop a dish, it’s replaceable. Worth the risk, since I don’t have to worry about what potentially harmful chemical might be seeping out of the plastic dishes. The Cafe Barware juice glasses hold about 5 ounces, and the salad plates are 9″ which is a perfect preschooler size. We also use the cereal bowls for our kids daily with no problems. And the dishes are microwave and dishwasher safe.

Since writing this post just a few weeks ago, we’ve broken two glasses. One when my son was drinking from a larger size glass in the kitchen with slippery hands (new rule - glasses for kids only at the table) and the other by me. They do shatter into many pieces of glass and shards, but we’re still using them carefully at the table.

Elaina: I read your post as I was wanting to simplify/update our placesettings — and toss the plastic. Costco to the rescue. They have a great price on Emeril Ultrawhite Porcelain Dinnerware, and the bowl and salad plate work for us — and for Kate (3 1/2). Here’s the link:

Oooohhh. I love them! I really do have a strange love of white dishes now. You’re right - these look like high quality at a great Costco price.
