Handknit Peruvian products for mom and baby
Last week my mom sent me an email from our cousin Janice with info about her friend Martha’s new venture, maki inc. The tagline for the company says it best: “Helping impoverished women in Peru by providing a source of revenue for their beautiful handmade products.”
In the spring of 2008, Martha spent a month volunteering in a women’s prison in the Andes. The women came from very poor backgrounds, and in her words, they “ended up making bad choices for good reasons” because they needed to earn money.
Now, Martha is helping these imprisoned Peruvian women (as well as other women in the area through mothers’ groups, and an emergency center that helps abused women) by offering knitting classes and providing a way to earn money through their handiwork.
On the brand new maki web site, you can buy knit purses, scarves, baby sweaters, stuffed animals, blankets, and pillow covers. Here are a few of my favorites:
You can read more about Martha’s work in her Notebook from Peru blog.
